Do you like the head and body in one piece?
Do you prefer to crochet the head and body in one piece?
Well you’re not alone. I love crocheting those pieces together especially when I’m using chenille yarn. The less sewing that I need to do the better.
I like sewing the head and body together when I’m using thinner yarn, but I find with chenille yarn, it saves my room of extra yarn fuzzies if I crochet them together.
Do you have patterns that you like that you’d prefer had the head and body together? Well, look no further because today is your lucky day and I’ll help you learn how to do that.
I have designed a quick separate head and body pattern as an example to show you how to do this (NOTE- this is not an actual pattern of mine, it is just a sample to teach you how to make the head and body into one piece).
Tip- You want to make sure your head and body end with the same amount of stitches. You may have to remove some rounds of the head so it matches the body.
Separate Head and Body first:
Head-
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: (inc) x 6. [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) x 6. [18]
Round 4: sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6. [30]
Round 6: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 5, 2 sc. [36]
Rounds 7-14: 36 sc. [36]
Round 15: 2 sc, dec, (4 sc, dec) x 5, 2 sc. [30]
Round 16: (3 sc, dec) x 6. [24]
Round 17: sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]
Here you would cut your yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Body-
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: (inc) x 6. [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) x 6. [18]
Round 4: sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6. [30]
Rounds 6-10: 30 sc. [30]
Round 11: (3 sc, dec) x 6. [24]
Rounds 12-14: 24 sc. [24]
Round 15: sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]
Rounds 16-17: 18 sc. [18]
Here you would cut your yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Now comes the fun part-
The important thing to remember is, you need to reverse the body when you crochet the head and body together. I always start with the head and work my way down to the body.
Head-
Round 1: 6 sc in MR. [6]
Round 2: (inc) x 6. [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) x 6. [18]
Round 4: sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6. [30]
Round 6: 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 5, 2 sc. [36]
Rounds 7-14: 36 sc. [36]
Round 15: 2 sc, dec, (4 sc, dec) x 5, 2 sc. [30]
Round 16: (3 sc, dec) x 6. [24]
Round 17: sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]
Now instead of cutting your yarn, you’ll start your body.
I look at how many total rounds of each total count at the end of each round.
Round 18: I always work the first round of the body in the FLO (front loop only). Why? I like that it looks like it’s been sewn on instead of crocheted together. I also feel like it helps with the shape. FLO, 18 sc. [18]
Rounds 19-20: You had 3 total rounds of 18 sts (Rounds 15-17). This is your last 2 rounds of 18. 18 sc. [18]
Round 21: I go back to the body and look at how many rounds of the end count 24 there are. There are 4 total. This round will be 1 of 4 rounds. sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, sc. [24]
Rounds 22-24: Here are your last 3 rounds to complete your total of 4 rounds of 24 sc. 24 sc. [24]
Round 25: Here is the next increase round. (3 sc, inc) x 6. [30]
Rounds 26-30: Go back to the body and see how many rounds of the end count 30 there are. There are 6 total rounds, so here you need 5 more repeat rounds. 30 sc. [30]
Round 31: Now you are getting to the end of your body and you need to do all of the decrease rounds now. (3 sc, dec) x 6. [24]
Round 32: sc, dec, (2 sc, dec) x 5, sc. [18]
Round 33: (sc, dec) x 6. [12]
Round 34: (dec) x 6. [6]
Now you cut your yarn and leave a tail to weave through the remaining front loops. Pull tight to close and weave in your end.
Remember- this is not a real pattern, I made up a random sequence to show you how to crochet the head and body together.
You have now made your head and body into one piece!! You can follow this same method with all patterns if you prefer to crochet the head and body in one piece.
